“He is such a sweetie,” she said later when she told Gus about her conversation with his assistant. “But you must have gotten him straight from grade school.”

Gus laughed. “Something like that. Actually, underneath the goofy exterior, I think he has real potential. He just has to gain self confidence in what he’s doing.”

Iskra studied her lover. “Huh.”

“What?”

“You’re a trailblazer.”

Gus looked surprised. “How so?”

“Well, your team is all heavily experienced and ready for a challenge like this… and then there’s the newbie. Dropping him into this situation, in the most challenging environment on the planet… that’s one hell of a risk.”

Gus nodded. “I like taking risks.” He got up and put his arms around her. “Look at us… this is a risk. I have two months left here and already I’m wondering how I can extend my stay. I’m falling for you, Iskra Ray—hard—and it’s dumb, and impossible, and I have no idea what we’re going to do after those two months are up.”

She kissed him. “A wise man told me just to enjoy the moment. Let’s do that and see what happens.”
